feliz ano from the chapada diamantina

hi everybody...

we (rytz, vroni and myself) just arrived (4.00am) in lencois, in the national park chapada diamantina. we met julz again who is here already for 7 days with some more frisbee players from australia and great britain (german players were there as well ;-)) and she organised an excellent guide for us for a 5 days hiking trip through the mountain ranges! we will sleep outside and maybe in small huts, depending on the weather.

i just stole pictures from julz so you can see, how it will look like the next days :-)

sigi

merry christmas, seasoning greetings, merry hanuka and so on (what every you prefer ;-))

oi everybody...

just arrived in olinda, i little colonial town north of recife.....
but beginning from the start:
after we left maceio, we headed for some more quite place on the coast line. we have found a section in the travel guide about a "rota ecological", an area north of maceio, where some of the local pousadas (little hotels) decided to run more sustain buisnesses concerning local development and enviroment. so just right for us. we found a pousada that is run by a swiss so we fought that would make things easier because of conversation issues ;-) not being able to speak portuguies in brazil is not ideal because people, especially in the north, dont really speak english. it was really an excellent decision to take this "rota" because what we have found was quite beaches, only fisherman and us, quite right after the hectic in maceio. that beach is called Tabuba and the pousada Arco Iris and is well worth a visit! (nice rock formations, quite sea, excellent sea food!!)

the next stop was in Japaratinga, a little town further north. the pousada dos cabanas was a suggestion of nino and marion, who where there before the worlds. we had a bungalow right in front of the beach, the hammock almost above the water ;-) again, an extensive beach, almost nobody excellent... really a nice placeto chill and relax, have caipis served in the hammock and so on...

then we took another bus ride to recife, which was not as easy as we thought in the first place! the bus was supposed to come at around 12, but the owner of the pousada told us, we should be there not later than 11.30, because the bus might come earlier. it came at 2pm but was full so it just drove by ;-) the locals waiting at the station kept calm and told us, the think there will be another one. so we waited until 2.30pm until it came, and was packed again. we found a standing place so we actually made to recife by 6.30pm (around 200km ;-)). coming to recife was a bit of a change again. big city, loud, dirty and a lot of people on the streets. we headed for a shopping center to find stuff (charger for my digicam :-( which i didnt find, and so on), annoyed from the mall we headed back to the hotel and prepared to go out in recife antigo, the party place to be were told. excellent choice, because there were thousends on the street to celebrate christmas with brasilian rock music and so on. what i realised the first time by celebrating a massive street party was the extreme diverse society in brasil. poor and rich people are living really close to each other, street kids sleeping between the party people, who dont really care about them, on the street (even right on a bridge) or are dunk or intoxicated by something else. this was hard to see, because it really seems that the party dont even see the kids anymore or dont wont bothered with them when the celebrate. those things are really immanent when you walk around bigger cities in brazil, at least what rytz told me about.......same situation the ext evening...we were on a reggae christmas night (sounds odd, doesnt it ;-)) and again, lot of street kids arounf try to get something to drink (alcohol for sure) or stuff the can sell for drugs. its a pitty, because brazil is not a poor country, not at all....its a thing of distribution of wealth....(sounds easy, i know its not)

anyway...now we are in olinda, only a couply of kms north of recife, which is much more relaxed, cleaner and less crowded. there will be a christmas party on the beach with capoeira and music (at least, that was told us ;-)) but before we will have a descent christmas dinner and a couple of selfmade caipis ;-))......

therefore: MERRY CHRISTMAS to everybody out there.....i hope you have a good time!!!

start of the trip!

bon dia everybody...

we are just about to start our trip to the northeast of brazil. the plan is to take a bus to the coast north of maceio and check out a small pousada that was suggested by one of our teammates. it is suppossed to be directly on the beach with hammocks right outside the door ;-) we will stay there for a couple of days to relax a bit from the championship stress and also to finalise the next trip places ;-)...

pictures are safed to the USB stick and i will put some of them online soon (hopefully ;-))

final standing

masters: usa - great britain ----- USA won
mixed: germany - usa ----- USA won
woman: usa - great britain ------ GB won
open: australia - philipines ------ Australia won

its a pitty that the philipines did not win, but they played with only 7 to 8 players the whole tournament so they aussies were just to strong...they deserved it...

germany had the same problem! not enough players.

the womens final was tight the whole time!
the masters final was quite clear for the states! (no austrians in the tournament :-))

yeah, this was the WCBU2007 ...next tournament in 2011...where is not cleared yet....i will be there.. ;-)

strandgut - germany (2:??)

bon diem everybody...

the second game against germany was not to win :-(....the y were just to strong and we made lot of unforced errors, had a lot of drops and bad throws...

anyway, we are 3rd in the world championships and defended our place from the last time which is great and more than a lot of people expected ;-))))

finals are:
masters: usa - great britain
mixed: germany - usa
woman: usa - great britain
open: australia - philipines (yes, right, the philipines!!!!! AWESOME team)

strandgut - scotland (10:6)

this was relativly safe to win. we were 2 behind in the beginning but started to play more concentrate and were controlling the game after a timeout scotland took ;-)...

now its a lunch break, and at 4.30pm we are playing against germany for the finals tomorrow, wish us luck!

strandgut - great britain (9:8)

yeahhhh

the revenge for the defeit in portugal was successful!!! in an extreme passionate game the last point decided who would still have the chance for the title and a lot pass against the wind from johannes to lilo right after the pull ended this game and we won! :-)))) it was really tight the whole time and we kept the concentration and are now preparing for germany (which means sleeping ;-))

strandgut - peace team (10:6)

nice game...

we are still in the tournament to reach the finals!!!!

GO STRANDGUT!!!

strandgut - canada (13 - 6)

this one was really well played! very concentrate, smart defence with hard marks on the center players who where not able to throw one huck. really to cool to watch at (and to coach ;-))

we played it safe, where never in danger and kept the concentration and fun until the end of the game!...

next game in the afternoon against peace team, a pick up team which should be beatable to!

strandgut - germany (10 - 13)

hi everybody...

first game of the day at 8.00am at the center court against germany. but dont expect chilly weather at 8, it was incredible hot! to the game: it was really good. germany was never in danger to lose, but we played much better than the day before! we had to much respect in the beginning, but we kepts it safe and played our game. a lot less drops or bad throws!....

so i think, 10-13 against the world champion is quite alright ;-)

thumb news

ok, concerning my thumb:

its quite alright. i think i was able to play alright yesterday, had nice catches and layout, scored 2 or 3 times and it felt alright. today i could not really bring my self in. it felt alright yesterday, but when your are blocked by some things so you cannot play the way you want to, it really sucks. even more than standing on the sideline and doing just coaching. it was just not funny and i cannot really be helpfull to my team when i play (even thought, we won the 2 games i was involved into ;-))))))))

so i reckon, i will just be on the sideline the next games...

the way i prepare my thumb is quite interessting as well ;-) first of all a little bit of antiseptiv paste to keep the wound from inflaming. then a small tissue above the wound that is fixed with a lot of tape so that the thumb cannot be bended in any direction. the next thing is a condom to play it safe and keep the wound free from sand and other stuff ;-) then the whole thing is fixed to the pointing finger, again with a lot of tape. next step is a little bit of carton as a protection against hard impact for example from discs. the carton forms a little spring if you say ;-) again taped to the pointing finger and furthermore to the entire handy so that nothing can move ;-) and thats the way i was playing. feels alright, but also a little bit strange ;-)

in generell, the wound looks good and the joint heals fast as well! i dont feel any pain...but it sucks ;-)))

alright, this was it for the first two days!!!!!
next update tomorrow
sigi

strandgut - spain (5:12(?))

sorry to have bad news again, because we really were not able to win this game. and again, not because of a way to strang opponent, but because of our failure to catch discs, run the appropriate cuts or throw safe passes. the spanish were cruel by using our mistake and scored right after the mistake. excellent work of them...

we really are stronger then we presented us today. and i hope, we can much better tomorrow, because tomorrow we will have a much tougher day. starting against germany, followed by canada and the peace team (pick up team)...germany will be hard, but canada should be on our level!

btw, i couldnt really play today....but see the next post...

strandgut - usa (1:13)

:-((((((

hm...what can i say, the americans didnt have to do anything special to win against us. we could bring the positive mood from yesterday over to today. i really have no clue why. to many drop, strange throws against the wind and so on. defence was quite alright, but the states played it safe and straight into the zone....

that was a big draw back, for me as well, because i was on the sideline until the last two points and saw, that we can do much better!

as i said...no clue....maybe we need more wind, because today it was really sunny and really nice. wind was blowing all the time thought, but not really strong.

strandgut - brazil (14:4)

alright, i reckon the brazil had just to less players to keep up with our speed. we played safe and concentrated so there was never a danger to lose this one.....

that was it for the day.

afterwards, we went to a churrascaria where zou can order a kind of buffett. at the buffett itself zou can get a lot of vegies, fries, smashed potates and stuff like that. as soon as you sit at the tables the waiters will come to you place with a lot of different meat sticks from pork to beef, chicken hearts, sausages, etc etc....eat as much as you can ;-)

there was a hawaiin party afterwards where i didnt go to, because to much meat in my stomache and to much sun and wind on my brain (i was just to tired ;-))

strandgut - ireland (9:5)

hi guys..

sorry for the delay ;-)
second game was against ireland. we started a bit later, because during warm up, a girl from the irish team injured herself (dislocatd knee :-(((( ) so we gave them 15min more minutes to prepare.

we were leading the whole time and controlled the entire game so we thought the irish was just not so strong. but it came out that the irish beat switzerland afterswards, so i reckon, we did a good job (including one point of mine for the statistics ;-))

next game: brazil

strandgut - schweiz (8:9)

hello everybody....

just finished our first game against switzerland...

after an excellent start (5:2) extreme wind came up and switzerland used this situation to come back into the game and then they were in front for the first time. then we came back again and were leading with 2 points....

bad luck....didnt play btw...to much wind and rain...

ok, next game will be ireland in 2 hours...if we start like in the first game, i am sure we can make it!

see ya guys

Dienstag, 11. Dezember 2007

hi everybody...

thanks for all the comments to my last post ;-) i really appreciate each of it!!

alright, what happend so far....after i got my thumb back in position, stitched and splinted we went back to the historic center where the sh.. happened ;-)....took some tourist pics and then headed off towards maceio. although, not entirely because we included a short stop over in aracaju, where a little festival towards a holyness of the sea was celebrated. after recording a capoeira session of the local fighting crew, we had dinner (this time not on plastic chairs) with excellent seafood and live brasil music....

next day we arrived late in maceio and tried and still trying to figure out where the fields are, where to get the best (and safest) food and so on....and i am working on becoming a left hander ;-) backhand is ok, the sidearm was quite alright either today, so concerning this, i should be able to play. i will talk to julz (who is a teammate of mine and a medic) to see what she can do with my right hand...maybe she is able to tape the thumb towards the hand somehow so i can play... i will see...maybe there is still a chance to play here.....(the painkillers are not neccessary anymore, pain has gone since 2 days)....

tomorrow we will start...switzerland (with a strong team!!) will be our first opponent, so wish us luck!!

alright...gotta go to registration ;-)
see ya guys!

ok everybody.....hospitals in salvador are not the cleanest but at least professional....

what happened..... we had lunch in a restaurant when suddenly the chair i was sitting in lost one leg...hm...nothing serious but i tried stop my fall, put my hand on the ground and squeezed my thumb between 2 stones....hm.... thought it was broken, but it came out to be badly dislocated...problem is, got a big wound which had to be stiched 3 times....so with a dislocated thumb and stiched wound, the worlds are over for me...excellent, isnt it...1 day in this beautiful country and i saw a hospital from inside out.....i will go to maceio anyway to report from the worlds, but only fron the sideline.....
